"The mission of the Gold Humanism Honor Society (GHHS) is to recognize individuals who are exemplars of humanistic patient care and who can serve as role models, mentors, and leaders in medicine. The power of the Society lies in bringing together like-minded individuals to sustain their own humanism and to inspire and nurture humanism in others. GHHS honors medical students, residents, fellows, role-model physician teachers and others who demonstrate excellence in humanistic clinical care, leadership, compassion and dedication to service."
-Arnold P. Gold Foundation Website
The GHHS was established by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation in 2002 to recognize individuals who are exemplars of humanistic patient care and who are prepared to serve as role models, mentors, and leaders in medicine.
The USU chapter was established in 2015. GHHS is responsible for contributing activities and events focused on humanism to the USU community. For example, the White Coat Ceremony is a GHHS initiative nationally as well as at USU and aims to welcome new students to the medical profession and provide a powerful emphasis on the combination of compassion and scientific excellence.
Currently, there are over 25,000 healthcare professionals in GHHS with chapters in 87% of allopathic schools and 39% of osteopathic schools. Membership goes well beyond selection and induction into an honor society - it includes a responsibility to model, support, and advocate for compassionate, patient-centered care throughout one's career.
Becoming a Member
At all medical schools, GHHS student membership starts with peer-nominations. Your class will receive an email asking for peer-nominations in your third year before the Step 1 study block. Nominations will be accepted up until sometime during the BBB period, and several reminder emails will be sent out before the deadline.
Ultimately, students with a certain number of nominations will be asked to submit an application for USU-GHHS membership. A maximum of 15% of the students in a given class can be selected for induction. This application will be sent out by 20 JAN 2018.
